Work is starting on the open tolling system for the PA Turnpike on the Western side of the state. WPXI-TV reports that stone poles, called gantries, have started to go up along the turnpike’s western side. The gantries will hold the EZ pass readers and cameras to capture your license plate for toll by plate options. The turnpike commission says this method will make it easier and safer to access the turnpike, as toll booths will be dismantled after the new system goes into effect in 2027. Officials believe that the open tolling will save about $25 million a year in maintenance costs.
