Lawmakers in Harrisburg are on their way to naming the Eastern box turtle as the official state reptile of Pennsylvania. The House Game & Fisheries Committee gave its unanimous support to a measure this week that would give the turtle that distinction. Supporters of the proposal say the Eastern box turtle can be found across the Commonwealth in rural, suburban, and urban habitats — adding that the turtles are often found near streams or ponds, or areas that have experienced heavy rainfall. The bill now will be considered for action by the full house.
