A Penn Township Man who was accused of stealing a total of $70,000 from family and friends tried to get them to invest in bitcoin through him.
State Police say that 22-year-old Randall Smail swindled people out of their money and kept it for himself, using $20,000 to make a down payment on a $102,000 luxury SUV last year. He said that he would use the money to invest in the crypto-currency and would give the victims reports on how much their investment increased.
Smail is charged with money laundering, bad checks and theft. A preliminary hearing is set for January 3rd.
