The former president of the Derry Area Aqua Club is in jail awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges that she embezzled money from the organization to pay for gambling and sports betting. The Trib reports that 35-year-old Josie Ruffner of Latrobe is accused of taking $24,000 from the group. Detectives say that she made over 150 unauthorized transactions using the group’s Debit Card between September and October. She also used the card for online gambling, at Rivers Casino, Apple, Sunoco and Giant Eagle and for transactions through Venmo and Cashapp. Ruffner admitted to the crimes when she was interviewed by detectives. She is in Westmoreland County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail and will have a preliminary hearing June 22nd.
